Colon Hydrotherapy FAQs

Q1. What is the colon?

The colon or large intestine is the last portion of the human digestive tract. It is 5 feet long and 2 ½ inches in diameter. There are a host of bacteria living in the colon that produce valuable nutrients like vitamin "K" and some portion of the "B" complex.

Q2. Colon Hydrotherapy, what is it?

Colonic, colon irrigation, colon therapy all these are some of the names for colon hydrotherapy. A few treatments of colon hydrotherapy could reverse what could be a lifetime of neglect of your health.

Q3. What is the purpose of getting a colon Hydrotherapy?

Waste material, especially that which has remained in the colon for some time (i.e. impacted feces, dead cellular tissue, accumulated mucus, parasites, worms etc.), poses several problems.

First, this material is quite toxic (poisonous). These poisons can re-enter and circulate in the bloodstream, making us feel ill, tired, or weak.Second, impacted materials impair the colon's ability to assimilate minerals and bacteria produced vitamins. And finally, a buildup of material on the colon wall can inhibit muscular action causing sluggish bowel movements, slow transit time, constipation, and the result of these disorders.

Q4. Okay, it appears to be important to cleanse the colon, but why not use enemas, suppositories, or laxatives instead?

Well, everything has its proper place, but those things really are not substitutes for colonics. Enemas are useful for emptying the rectum - the lowest 8-to12 inches of the colon. Usually, two to four quarts of the water are used to do that.

Suppositories are intended to stimulate a bowel movement when constipation is already present .It will only empty a small portion of the fecal contents. Prescription laxatives are poisons that the body recognizes and in the process of eliminating the laxatives some fecal contents are removed also. Herbal laxatives are formulated for various purposes such as: to undo the effects of temporary constipation, to build up the tone and strength of the colon muscle and increase peristaltic contractions.

But the Rolls Royce of colon cleansing, without question, is colonic irrigation.

Q5. What are signs of a colon that is not functioning properly?

When sufferers finally visit a physician, they usually relate a history of one or more of these complaints that go back years: constipation, coated tongue, fetid breath, shallow complexion, dark circles under the eyes, abnormal body odor, cold hands and feet, blood pressures up or down, brittle nails and hair, sagging posture (pot belly), tension, fatigue, allergies, indigestion, menstrual problems, swelling of legs, asthma, blackache, and loss of memory or concentration.

Q6. Is colon hydrotherapy habit-forming?

Colon Hydrotherapy retrains the muscle of the bowel to regain strength. After a series, most people regain the normal bowel function of one or more bowel movement per day. Trouble is usually first recognized by an individual as constipation or diarrhea. These danger signs along with foul-smelling stool and gas may be overlooked. Golden brown used to be considered the normal color, but now that vegetables are recommended the color reflects the vegetables. During constipation you may observe a darkening of the stool because of the longer transition time in your system. The colon will distribute the results of decay, fermentation and purtrification into blood.

Q7. What should I do before a session?

It may be more comfortable to refrain from eating at least two hours before your scheduled appointment. For best result, prepare a diet of vegetables and grains.

Q8. After a session, how am I expected to feel?

Most people remark on how clean and light they feel. Increased energy and feeling of well being are the common responses.

Q9. Will colon Hydrotherapy affect the bacteria that reside in the colon?

In the early part of the century, more than one hundred and sixty different species of bacteria were found in the colon. Of these, more than one-third were found to possess pathogenic, or disease-producing, properties. Dr. Kellogg, M.D. points out more than twenty species of putrefactive bacteria that are found in the stool of flesh-eaters, all of which produce very highly toxic products. One of the most common and abundant of these is the bacillus of Welch, which produce enormous quantities of offensive gas and highly active poison.

Q10. Will Colon Hydrotherapy help even though I have sufffered from constipation for a long time?

According to Dr. John Kellogg, M.D., founder of Kellogg cereals, "The cause of a disease so universal in civilized communities must be very numerous to produce this condition in so great a number of people living under many different conditions and with different habits of life. In general, it may be said that the causes of constipation are abnormal habits or conditions of life, the result of what we call civilization. Primitive man rarely suffered from constipation!" Dr. Kellogg said adults are more likely to suffer from constipation than children are, although the malady begins early in life. He further states that women are more subject than men to intestinal activity. In fact, he said four-fifths of all women suffer from constipation from their youth, onward. Briefly summarizing the several acts by which the colon empties are:

a) Contraction of the diaphragm-occurs in deep breathing.

b) Contraction of the abdominal muscle.

c) Pressure of the thighs against abdomen (as in squatting position assume by primitive man). Reflex contraction of the abdominal muscles.

e) Contraction of the colon.

f) Relaxation of the anus.

g) Contraction of the levator-ani muscles.

Any influence, which interferes with a single one of these, may cause constipation!

Q11. How much time is required for a colon hydrotherapy session?

The first session may take longer than the follow up sessions. Plan about an hour and a half for the first session. The actual session time is usually between thirty and forty-five minutes. After the first session, the body will know what to expect and become more relaxed.

Q12. What will Colon Hydrotherapy do for the colon?

Specifically, a colonic is used to accomplish the following:

a) It Cleans the Colon: Toxic material is broken down and removed so it can no longer harm your body or inhibit assimilation and elimination. Even debris built up over a long period is gently but surely removed in the process of a series of irrigations. Once impacted material is removed, your colon can begin again to cooperate as it was meant to. In this very real sense, a colonic is a whole body rejuvenation.

b) It exercises the Colon Muscles: The buildup of toxic debris weakens the colon muscles and impairs their functioning. The gentle filling and emptying of the colon improves the peristaltic activity (muscular contraction) by which the colon naturally moves material. This will help speed up the transit time of fecal material once the colon muscle have been toned, strengthened, and rejuvenated.

c) It Reshapes the Colon: When problem conditions exit in the colon, they tend to alter its shape and structure which in turn cause more health problems. The gentle action of the water, couple with the massage techniques and experience of the colon therapist, help to examine bulging pockets of waste and eventually narrowed, spastic constrictions, finally enabling the colon resume its natural state. Other manipulative and massage techniques can help reshape the colon structure over time.

d) It Stimulates Reflex Points: Every system and organ of the body is connected to the colon by reflex points. A colonic irrigation stimulates these points, thereby affecting the corresponding body parts, organs, tissues, glands, etc. in a beneficial way (similar to reflexology).

e) It Hydrates the Body: Our bodies are made up of 60-70% water and with the use of pure water in the colonic our bodies are able to absorb much needed clean and pure water to hydrate the cell of the body so that can function at a higher rate as well as dilute the toxins already present within the body.

Q13. If colonics are so good, why have not I heard about them before?

In a way, the answer to that is a commentary on our present day lifestyle.
Historically, artifacts and records show that people have regularly purified their bodies, including cleansing the colon. Around the turn of the twentieth century, the present day colonics machines was developed, providing a significantly improved method of accomplishing colon cleansing.

Q14. Are colonics dangerous in any way?

Being an essentially natural process, there is virtually no danger with a colonic. Skilled therapists will exercise extra care with an elderly person who is severely constipated. Colonics are occasionally performed on a pregnant woman to relieve constipation.

Our intention is to provide a safe and healthy service so that you do not have to worry. Cleansing and sterilization of the necessary equipment is done as normal procedure and clean linen is used for each colonic as well. A colonic is absolutely safe and hygienic. Speculum and pipes are thrown away after each use.

Q15. I am a woman. What if I'm having my periods? ….

No problem. It's perfectly safe and beneficial to have a colonic during your periods. In fact, some women find that having a colonic on the day their period starts reduces the amount of menstrual discomfort experienced. A tampon is usually worn by the female for comfort.

While we are on the subject, many women have noticed that after completing a cleansing program (also know as detoxification) that menstrual discomfort has been eliminated or substantially reduced from that time on.

Q16. I've heard that I shouldn't get colonics because it upsets the electrolyte balance. What's that all about?

Electrolytes are minerals in the body (mainly sodium and potassium salts) that maintain the proper electrical charges and pH balance (acid and alkalinity balance) in the various organs and tissues of the body. Each one of these tissues, organs, and body activities has a balanced proportion of minerals to maintain the necessary pH balance. The stomach, for example, should maintain an acid pH, while the duodenum (first part of the small intestine) should be alkaline (basic) in order for proper digestion to occur. If this balance is disrupted, then digestion will be impaired.

The pH electrical balance in the colon is very near neutral, ideally being slightly acid. A strong acid or alkaline environment is not necessary because digestion doesn't take place in the colon. Rather, a major function of the colon is to reabsorb the fluid and electrolytes from the unformed stool, which is moving into the colon from the small intestine. After the fluid and electrolytes are reabsorbed and stool is formed, the colon moves the stool into the rectum and out of the body.

The majority of the material released during a colonic is formed stool that has already had the fluid and electrolytes removed from it, so the amount lost is very minimal and easily replaced by the body from the food and fluid we ingest.

Q17. Will a colonic clear up my skin?

Your skin actually "breathes" and is an important organ of elimination of waste material. Sometimes. If the colon, liver, lungs or kidneys are functioning poorly, the skin will be required to make up the difference. Surface eruption on the skin may occur due to toxins being released.

Cleansing and healing the colon diminishes the burden placed upon the skin as well as on other organs of elimination: lungs, liver and kidneys. As elimination is accomplished through its proper channels, the skin will often clear up.
